STATESBORO, Ga. – Brad Deppermann was perfect through five innings as the North Florida Ospreys defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles 13-3 at J.I. Clements Stadium and swept the two-game season series.
North Florida (10-8) scored five runs over the first three innings and tacked on three more in the sixth inning to lead 9-0 before Georgia Southern (11-7) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“I am really disappointed in the way we have played the game the last two days. That is not acceptable. I don’t want to take anything away from North Florida. Their starter was outstanding,” Head Coach Rodney Hennon said.
Depperman set down the first 15 batters he faced before Cal Baker led off the sixth with a single. The Eagles scored three runs in the frame on a wild pitch, Aaron Mizell sac fly and an Andrew Kelley single to right center.
Depperman (1-0) picked up his first career win. He allowed three hits and struck out seven batters, including two in each of the second and third innings, in his second start of the season.
“We finally got to him [Depperman] a little bit later in the game. The thing is if we don’t give away free bases, we are right there in the game but the mistakes we made take ourselves right out of the game,” Hennon said.
Avery Fagan made his 2015 debut and took the loss after allowing a run in the second inning. Fagan (0-1) walked two batters and struck out three over two innings.
The Ospreys finished with 14 hits. Patrick Ervin and Nick Karmeris recorded four hits each, while Ryan Roberson and James Abbatinozzi both tallied three hits each.
The Eagles were held to five hits with two coming off the bat of Baker. Baker made his first appearance of the season and started at second base.
